Loop Biotech is the inventor of the world’s first mushroom coffin, urn and funeral carrier.
During their graduation project at Delft University of Technology, founders Bob and Lonneke Hendrikx sought to find a way to leave behind a positive ecological footprint after parting ways with our loved ones.
During their research, they found their answer in the forest: mycelium – the underground root network of mushrooms and nature’s recycler. Mycelium has the amazing ability to convert dead organic matter into nourishment for nature.
Imagine how incredible it would be if, in our final moments, we could be part of this natural cycle, helping to nourish the earth and foster new life. That’s exactly what Loop Biotech is striving to achieve. Its mission is to enrich nature and protect the planet for future generations.
Its product line entails three enriching products:
- Loop Living Cocoon™: Become part of nature’s majestic loop of life and enrich the earth with the world’s first living coffin.
- Loop EarthRise™: Be remembered in nature by becoming a source for new seedlings to thrive with the mushroom urn.
- Loop ForestBed™: Become one with nature within 45 days with the world’s first living funeral carrier.
In addition, it has designed multiple accessories and interior linings to complement their products and create a truly personal and memorable farewell experience. The products are grown from upcycled hemp fibres and local mushroom species and are 100% natural. These materials leave a positive footprint by enriching the soil and promoting biodiversity.
All of their products are officially certified by the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturer’s Association (FFMA), making the products suitable for both natural and traditional burials, as well as for cremation. In addition, they function just like traditional funeral coffins and have already been used by several funeral entrepreneurs across the UK, including Poppy’s Funeral, Poetic Endings and GreenAcres.
Loop Biotech has empowered more than 2,000 people in Europe to enrich nature and, since 4 February 2025, it has officially launched their products in the UK. Here, it works with local distributors, such as JC Atkinson, who are able to deliver their products on the same day.
The response has been overwhelming, with The Guardian, BBC, and other big news outlets covering the products’ introduction to the UK. For more information, please visit www.loop-biotech.com.
