TikTokker Inez Capps, a funeral director from Nottinghamshire, explains how her online videos about the profession took off and provides a few tips on how to get started.

Inez, who works for Kinton and Daughter, Nottingham, has already racked up more than 108,000 followers.

Watching TikToks made by other professionals got Inez thinking about how she could use the social media platform to give people an insight into her own trade.

“I saw some other content creators introducing themselves in normal clothing and then reintroducing themselves in their uniform,” says Inez.

“Sometimes people were shocked at seeing what the person looked like in normal clothing!”

“I took the leap of faith and made my first TikTok [in March 2021] hoping to spread awareness around funerals – and show people that behind the top hat and uniform we are normal, empathetic people.”

She also wanted to show a female at work in what was once a male-dominated profession.

“There are more women now, which makes me so proud, but it was rare when I started in 2012.”

Inez’s first video—revealing what happens to a coffin after the crematorium curtain closes—went viral.

“The next video was me showing people that at my funeral directors we use a bed for people to view their loved ones on, not a coffin.”

“I believe in an open-door policy to clients and informing them of everything, every step of the way through their funeral and grief journey. My videos were always about showcasing the profession and not my personal funeral company.”

Inez says she’s shocked by the level of interest: “It still blows my mind that people are interested in what I create.”

When it comes to the technical aspects of TikTok, she is reassuring. “Once I got to understand how to record, it wasn’t too hard. Videos can be 60 seconds, three minutes, or as long as 10 minutes.”

Inez’s Top TikTok Tips

  • Be transparent with your viewers and respectful to those in your care.
  • Be clear and informative, and don’t show too many things in one video.
  • Videos can also be shared on other social media platforms.

She adds, “Using social media has become a great way for funeral directors to engage with their local community and be more open to clients.”
