Lighthouse Funerals offers alternative to corporate acquisitions

A new acquisition company targeting UK funeral homes has launched with a promise to preserve family business identity – addressing growing concerns among independent funeral directors about corporate consolidation.

Lighthouse Funerals was launched last year. CEO Steven Wilton previously worked at the family-run Brian Wilton Funeral Home in Bournemouth. The role gave him first-hand insight into the operational challenges of family ownership and the impact of selling to a corporate entity.

In 2011, he oversaw the sale of his family business to a corporate group, shaping his perspective on the effects of ownership change. It reinforced the importance of preserving values, culture, and local relationships after a sale. That understanding formed the basis for Lighthouse Funerals, which seeks to acquire established funeral homes across the UK.

Steven says: “Lighthouse Funerals takes a flexible approach to support smooth transitions while retaining each business identity. We aim to minimise disruption and preserve the distinct character of family-run firms.”

The firm distinguishes itself by prioritising continuity. Unlike corporate consolidators, Lighthouse says it aims to retain local leadership and preserve established relationships. Its model allows decision-making to remain local, with former owners and staff encouraged to remain involved in the ongoing running of the business.
