Matthew Uden, MD of London and Kent-based W Uden & Sons, has launched a podcast to share the real stories, frustrations and values shaping the funeral profession to a wider audience.

He explains why he believes it’s time for more honest conversations:

“A funeral director’s podcast? It might not sound like edge-of-your-seat listening. But here’s the thing, our profession is packed with stories and emotions. It’s also full of unspoken truths, outdated attitudes and standards that need challenging. That’s why I started the W Uden & Sons Podcast – to speak openly, share honesty and have real conversations about the work we do and the people we serve.

“At W Uden & Sons, we’ve supported families for generations. I’ve grown up immersed in this world, its weight, its responsibility, and its extraordinary potential. But I’ve also seen where we, as professionals, can do better. This podcast isn’t about promotion, it’s about progress. It’s a space to tell stories, ask tough questions and say the things we often leave unsaid.

“Too often, funeral conferences skim the surface. Everyone’s polite, no one rocks the boat. But we need to talk about care, standards and the real cost of getting it wrong. And sometimes, it helps just to hear someone say what you’ve been quietly thinking about.

“The W Uden & Sons Podcast is for anyone in the funeral trade – directors, arrangers, embalmers and for those curious about what really goes on behind the scenes. It’s not preachy, and it’s certainly not polished. It’s honest. If something resonates, brilliant. If it challenges how someone works, even better. And if it gets people talking about their loved ones’ wishes, it might ease some pressure later.

“We’re only a few episodes in, but the response has been humbling. I’m proud to be speaking from the heart and hopeful this small platform can spark bigger conversations. Because discussing big things well isn’t just about tradition. It’s about truth, care and never settling for ‘that’ll do’.”

Episodes are available on Spotify, YouTube and via their website.
